Excerpt from the introduction section of the book:

“The problem related to women and their status can be located in the manner these societies treat their girl child. Discussing the socio-demographic implications of the girl child in terms of education, health and sex ratio, A. R. Nanda and Lalitendu Jagatdeb argue that demographic disparity between girls and boys though universal has remained largely invisible because  focus  is on women and not the girl child. An analysis of some of the human development indicators draws a dismal picture. Linking demographic and economic realities with the condition of the girl child in South Asia they suggest an integrated and holistic approach to the girl child’s development. The need to integrate the girl child in the mainstream development process is a central concern that must be urgently addressed to by planners and administrators.”
